Lonnie Johnson

Alonzo "Lonnie" Johnson (February 8, 1899 – June 16, 1970) was an American blues and jazz singer/guitarist and songwriter who pioneered the role of jazz guitar and is recognized as the first to play single-string guitar solos. Johnson was not only one of the few black blues musicians invited to be 'guest featured' on a number of jazz recording sessions, he was also one of the only classic 1920's blues artists to have a revived a high-charting career after WWII. more »

That's crazy man, ha ha, ha. [spoken wordsElmer Snowden]

Yes, dear ol' New Orleans, is where I long to be.
Back in dear ol' New Orleans, is where I long to be.
Where the skies is always blue, and true love is always free.

I been away so long, I've been so many years.
Yes, I been away so long, from my ol' hometown.
That my heart begin cryin' every time that evenin' sun goes down.

It's a long road to travel, but I just ain't got the fare.
It's a long road to travel, but I just ain't got my fare.
Guess I'll hitchhike my way, someday I'll be back there

Dear ol' New Orleans, they call it the “land of dreams.”
Yes, dear ol' New Orleans, it's known for the “land of dreams.”
It's my old hometown, it's dear ol' New Orleans.

I've traveled so many miles, still I got a long ways to go.
I've traveled so many miles, still I got a long ways to go.
Yes, if I can't hitchhike my way, I'll start walkin' down that long ol' lonesome road.

In my home you lay down sleepin', in the day you wake up with a smile on your face.
Yes, at night you lay down dreamin', wake up with a smile upon your face.
That's why I wanna go back to New Orleans, that's the only place.

That was … good, Lonnie! Maaan … [spoken wordsElmer Snowden]
That makes me feel … right … [spoken wordsLonnie Johnson]
Did that take you back home? [spoken wordsElmer Snowden]
Oh yeah, that takes me back, Jack … [spoken wordsLonnie Johnson]
Huh? Doesn't that get you homesick? [spoken wordsElmer Snowden]
That takes me real … way down that railroad track … [spoken wordsLonnie Johnson]
