I was born in Kansas City
You could easily have missed me in among the walkathon girls
My mother was a slippery slope, my father was a broken rope
And jazz was my whole wide world
A little bit scared and the lights all shining
I stood on the stage and something winding down from heaven pulled me up
I had to work hard to keep up
And the cat that can be alone is one up on the cat that can't
Yes, you can make it on your own, just learn to hold your own hand

Fell in love a couple times
I felt it deeply in my mind, but I always came out scratching my head
A million times I almost bought it
Spent some time inside my closet, pulling hair and pulling threads
Out of control in the West Village; keeping it cool under lock and key
I kept improvising hard. When I was hooked, I still was free
Because the cat that can be alone Is one up on the cat that can't
Yes, you can make it on your own, just learn to hold your own hand

Well, if you look at a few of my pictures, they do say my heart is with him
But look at the rest of the pictures: I'm looking away, or within
And in the most beautiful hat I sailed forth on a summer's day
And I'm still living on the wings of that summer, in a beautiful way
And no, you don't need a man, you just need a band to play
