She asked to roll the windows down, drew a heart inside the fog It's been eight years since she has stepped outside these hospital walls So I take her to the diner, where the waitress knows my name And she greets us with a smile, and Laura does the same But something inside her clicked before she finally realized That Laura's right here with me, words stumble by surprise So she takes us to our table, and tells us "This one's on the house" And I've never felt so lucky, and I've never been more proud Just to see her smile briefly, and before she turns away She tucks her hair behind her ears, and then I see her body sway There's Dylan on the jukebox and a chance that I can't miss So I twirl her like the movies, and steal it like a kiss And she's saying "Oh, please take me to the picture show I'm just not ready to go back home, alright?" Driving slow, her hands are cold It's a reminder we may only have tonight So I'm holding on She's letting go Of the fight Now I'm writing in my journal, while Laura's sound asleep It's four hours after midnight in a downtown apartment suite And there's a humming on the TV; a snowy static on the screen And a single bed to sleep in for the seventh day this week So I'm laying on the couch tonight, to give her space, but I won't be far But I know without a single doubt, when I awake, she's in my arms Now, I don't take it for granted, I count my blessings every day To have finally found my better half and at such an early age Well, I tell my friends about her, saying "One day I'll marry her!" And they laugh at me, or they brush it off, but I swear I'll keep my word Don McLean will play at our wedding, the song we heard on her stereo The night she sang her love to me "And I Love You So" Keeps saying "Oh, please take me to the picture show I'm just not ready to go back home, alright?" Driving slow, her hands are cold It's a reminder we may only have tonight So I'm holding on She's letting go Of the fight The nurse decides to wake me up and let me know it's half-past eight Brings me dinner from the station, I try to keep my eyes awake So I take a look beside me, and I see Laura in the bed Oh, a simple dream can make it seem like an easier life instead But I'm forced to face reality, it's sober, stark and bleak I only hope she finds serenity in the hours of which she sleeps There's a rose that's tinted yellow on the table next to me From the night I said "I love you" and stole her breath while on one knee She wrapped her arms around me, tears of joy staining her cheeks A brand new life awaited us, we were engaged at just nineteen! But the nosebleeds started rapidly, and pretty soon it was commonplace Her body rejected any medicine, she threw up every meal she ate Now bed-bound here in Chelsea, sixteen hours from her home Her parents still send postcards, but she never reads the note Keeps saying "Oh, please take me to the picture show I just want to get outta here tonight" I said "I know" This room is cold It's a reminder where we have to spend our lives She keeps crying "Please, just let me leave" But I know that she won't make it on her own So I'm holding on She's letting go Of the fight
