They played the moose halls and bars, little big time stars on the stand
For free drinks and smokes, even a couple tokes with the fans
Singing ol' shot the fox, gin on the rocks, and promised land
Falling in and out of love
They were just another small town band
Randy and Robin got a baby waiting home that wasn't planned
A truck full of tools and a house with no rules cannot stand
Gary's in the back room counting tips and practicing his slight of hand
Twenty bucks apiece and a fifty for himself when he can
Tony's out sitting in his car trying to write the next great line
And he's saving up some dough, gonna hit the radio
And not be just another small town band
Life has a way of making sense some days
And other times it simply falls apart
But it felt just like church when folks punched out of work
To hear them sing one straight from the heart
Randy and Robin they split long ago before he met my mom
Gary had a good run, but he ran just a little bit too long
I tried to call up Tony just to offer him a drink and say hello
But it's hard to pin him down now with three hit singles on the radio
So I fill up a glass and raise up a toast when I can
To that wild old bunch fools, man they thought they were cool
