People like you and me like extra pepper on our eggs
But our lips burn from cajun on crab
We still eat them anyway

People like you and me love to explore territory foreign to our feet but not our spirits

We brought back a few continental foods and items made of local patterns 
By the hands of aunties and sisters
But we're more concerned with the fact 
That our favorite friends couldn't fit inside of our suitcase
Our love now having to be expressed through keyboards and glass screens

We are three or four hours behind
Yet our country seems to think that we're years ahead
Ahead of nations that know just how much our human hands 
Affect our food, water, and air
Nations that may not know how to read or write 
But are closer to God than those most literate in our own
Nations that love so hard you can taste it
Hear it whistle in the wind as it hugs you

We don't mind getting our fingers dirty
Whether that's with fufu and soup or life

I spent one month in London and thought that I left my heart there
But I quickly learned after spending four months in Ghana
That I left a large chunk of it there
In the international student dorm
University of Ghana's English department
The Twi class that I took in a tiny room with a remote controlled air conditioner
In the cars belonging to Uber and Taxify drivers 
Who shared more than their driving space with me
Chop bars packed with people who were filled with joy 
That I could say a few words in Twi
People from Tema and Côte d'Ivoire and Nigeria and Senegal 
And China and Sudan and Switzerland
Not to even mention the states within the country that's on my birth certificate

It's beautiful to be back home
But on days when 
Trump and his puppets make decisions that impact my neighbors and I
And on days where I have to choose between scheduling a dental exam 
And facing my looming college debt
I am reminded of people like you and me

People like you and me don't necessarily always escape to travel
We travel to escape
