Most of my past won't go away
My mind won't let it, I just can't forget it
It was so good that I'll never regret it
But I can't move on with a positive mind
Unless I find something better
To make me look forward and not regret the fact
That what was is no more
When someone far better walks through the door

Through the door to my heart
To make me start believing in myself
Again, I need a friend
That understands me and what I've been through
Makes me feel needed and doesn't need clues
About what to do in order to please me
One with whom I can feel at ease
Without conversation
One who's presence gives me a sensation
But then when I'd given up hope
And lost interest and couldn't cope
With anything threatening me
I'd become secure by becoming free
Of emotional strains
A painless life by having no aims and dreams
Where failure to win was never there
Nothing to lose and cause despair

So then, from out of the blue
A flash from the past and I knew
Although, with a sense of fear
The urge to progress became clear
To me, what I saw and see
Was the part that was preventing me
From moving on, the one
With whom I felt I belonged
And now a second chance
Learning from mistakes and circumstances
Were now no longer the same
I'd suffered insufferable pain
In the past, but the pleasure
Was so immense you couldn't measure.

So moving forward the past is now present
Now those years seemed just like a day ago
The memories survived to make us reflect
Listen, learn and respect ourselves
And what we need
Enthuse our lives but with space to breathe
And believe that once again, 
That love for me, which spelt fear
Was clearly something I wanted near
To refill my heart with feelings of hope
And not doubt
Although, with her, I went three years without
Like a gift given and lost soon after
Which for me was an emotional disaster
But now we're back together
Can we now live happily ever after?
She was the past that wouldn't go
And now she is the present
Like the gift I had wished for, but more
A listener, lover, and a friend
And now that we are together
My future happiness on her depends
The past is now the present
Like a present from the past
Before was evanescent
But this time hope it lasts
The present is the past

This time I hope it lasts
Forever
