It's only the first day of fall
And there's already the overcast dread
Just yesterday I was sittin thinkin how at home it rains every day
And now today in Pittsburgh, raindrops fall on my head
See, in Florida the rain doesn't stop
Or it does and then it just starts again
Maybe in school it'd be better off if they don't teach you HOW rain works, but rather where and when and if it's gonna end

And we're so close to the islands
It's the Caribbean we're livin in
And Cuba's bout a hundred miles away
But I'm not givin in
Cause Castro took everything away from my family
But the motherfucker's dead, so tell me where's the anomaly?

Here in Pittsburgh, The seasons, they come and they go
But back in Miami we just got hot and less hot, and we call that cold
And the hurricanes come and we put up the shudders
And we go to gas stations, and we buy all the water
And the power goes out and we stay in at home
We break out the board games cause we can't charge our phones
And maybe a tree falls on your house
Maybe it passes right by you but kills someone else

And now up here I don't have any of that
I don't see my family
I don't know when my dog are gonna pass
And I'll go home and leave a plate of food on the floor
Cause there are no dogs around to try and eat it anymore
And the winter scares me
And I think that's a bummer
And I think I wanna see the snow
But then I think of summer
And I taste the pastelitos
Feel the humid ass air
When I exit the airport I get big ass hair
Cause it's hot down there
It's hot at home
And it's hard to think about the second language I know
That I can't use up here cause nadie habla español
Y nadie piensa que yo me siento solo sin el sol

I don't think I felt so Cuban till I moved away
Cause culture permeates the heart
It permeates the brain
And I struggle with identity
And I hate that I say
The hard Y instead of the U when I pronounce my last name

For the people up here
I don't think they know the difference
I don't think they know the discretion between what is and what isn't a micro aggression
When you call me by another name
When you teach me for a whole semester then call me Diego it's a shame

You should be ashamed
At how you treat the Latin people
They come here from horror hoping they might just be equal
Then you put them in cages
You treat them like the others
You have the audacity to take crying children from their mothers
Thank God I'm Cuban
Thank God our refugees are protected
But we're terrified this motherfucker is reelected
How long until he's less scared of communism than of me?
How long until the reason we came is the exact reason we leave?

It's only the first day of fall
And there's already the overcast dread
And I think about the people who are hurting in this country
And I try to part the clouds in my head

Cause what we've made for ourselves here is beautiful
And perseverance wins, so persevere
And your knowledge is all you truly have in this country, so study hard and hold it dear

That's what my mother told me
As she was told by her father
Who did the hard work
Who crossed on the water
Who made this life
This American Dream
Cause we work the hardest
They're the crop, we're the cream

Do not forget that
My lovely Latin people
Our music and our food each have no equal
We dance, we sing, we are the true melting pot
And ICE melts
So boil with everything you got
