Flat Earth

The flat Earth model is an archaic and scientifically disproven conception of Earth's shape as a plane or disk. Many ancient cultures subscribed to a flat Earth cosmography, including Greece until the classical period (323 BC), the Bronze Age and Iron Age civilizations of the Near East until the Hellenistic period (31 BC), and China until the 17th century. The idea of a spherical Earth appeared in ancient Greek philosophy with Pythagoras (6th century BC), although most pre-Socratics (6th–5th century BC) retained the flat Earth model. In the early 4th century BC Plato wrote about a spherical Earth, and by about 330 BC his former student, Aristotle, had provided strong empirical evidence for this. I've been standing on this street now
For the best of seven years
Ever since I left the beat downtown
And traded in its fears
Now my job ain't quite as dangerous
But it matters none the less
Got to keep that traffic movin'
So I give it all my best

I work the lunchtime hour down on Piedmont Avenue
Right in front of that big office tower they built in '82
My gloves are white, my whistle's loud
My motions are quite clear
Just signal where you're turnin'
And I'll tell ya when to steer

I say "STOP" you better stop
I say "GO" then move along
Cause forty cars a minute pass this spot I'm standing on
And if you wanna keep your license son
Here's some words that you should heed
When I'm here
You don't speed on Piedmont

Now I know that times are changin'
And I know I'm gettin' old
But I still feel a job well done
Is worth its weight in gold
Still they're puttin' up a stoplight now
To tell people when to stop
Cause I guess they feel it's better
Than some gray haired traffic cop

I reckon when they move me
They'll expect me to retire
But I still have a few days left
While they're stringin' up the wire
And I never will understand it
No, I never will believe
That some blinkin' yellow metal box
Can replace someone like me

Cause I say "STOP" you better stop
I say "GO" then move along
Cause forty cars a minute pass this spot I'm standing on
And if you wanna keep your license son
Here's some words that you should heed
When I'm here
You don't speed on Piedmont
Long as I'm here
You don't speed on Piedmont
