Modest Mouse

Modest Mouse is an American indie rock band who were formed in 1993 in Issaquah, Washington, by singer/lyricist/guitarist Isaac Brock, drummer Jeremiah Green, and bassist Eric Judy. Since their 1996 debut album, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, their lineup has centered around Brock, Green and Judy. Guitarist Johnny Marr (formerly of The Smiths) joined the band in May 2006, along with percussionist Joe Plummer (formerly of the Black Heart Procession) and multi-instrumentalist Tom Peloso, to work on the album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. Guitarist Jim Fairchild joined the band in February 2009. Their name is derived from a passage from the Virginia Woolf story "The Mark on the Wall" which reads, "I wish I could hit upon … more »

Horses, wagons, aeroplanes, cars, bathtubs into drains
Smartphones, doorbells, refrigerators, pencils, hens, paper
Skin, hair, watermelons, alligators, volcanos and super freighters
Dust on floors, grease in pores, the food you eat, opened doors
From the mountains to the shoes you bought
Scissor lifts, toys, rocks, grass, asps, planets, tin, magnets
Rabbits, palms, dreams, an ocean of our own air

Quarks, stars, defibrillators, blinds, struts, beaks, shocks
(Nothing in this world's gonna petrify me, we are repeating)
Tornados, crockpots, kumquats, baseballs, plants both big and small
Oysters, muscles, mirrors, walls, EKG, balloons (we are transmitting)
Cocoons, macadamias, plankton blooms (we are receiving)
Sulfur pools, rivers, ice, steam, patent leather, lice

Well, nothing in this world's gonna petrify me, we are repeating
(Vacuum cleaners, windows, lights, fans, scales, your smart device)
(Computers, clocks, drones, clones, trees and stalks)
(Moles, trolls, lights at four way stops, spiders) We are transmitting
(Mushrooms, atoms and their colliders) We are receiving
(Salmon, pinecones, office dividers, mitochondria, caterpillars)

Well, nothing in this world's gonna petrify me, we are repeating
(Packages left at the door, tin cans, the earth's core)
(Mustard seeds, turtles, weeds, herds of elk, teeth, you, me)
We've been transmitting
(Flocks of birds, forest fires, crispy chicken, bengal tigers)
We've been receiving
Jewelry, lumps of coal, things gettin' pulled into black holes
Horses, wagons, aeroplanes, cars, bathtubs into drains

But some things aren't visible
But some things aren't visible
Like yesterday, beams of light, cellphone calls (and tomorrow)
Like yesterday, beams of light, cellphone calls (and tomorrow)
No, some things aren't visible
No, some things aren't visible
Beams of light, breath and wind, yesterday (and tomorrow)
No, some things aren't visible

Vacuum cleaners, windows, lights, fans, scales, your smart device
Computers, clocks, drones, clones, trees and stalks
Moles, trolls, lights at four way stops, spiders
Mushrooms, atoms and their colliders

Nothing in this world's gonna petrify me, we are repeating
(Packages left at the door, tin cans, the earth's core)
Always vibrating
(Mustard seeds, turtles, weeds, herds of elk, teeth, you, me)
We are transmitting
(Flocks of birds, forest fires, crispy chicken, Bengal tigers)
