The Magnificat

The Magnificat (Latin for "[My soul] magnifies [the Lord]") is a canticle, also known as the Song of Mary, the Canticle of Mary and, in the Byzantine tradition, the Ode of the Theotokos (Greek: Ἡ ᾨδὴ τῆς Θεοτόκου). It is traditionally incorporated into the liturgical services of the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, Lutheran Churches and the Anglican Communion. Its name comes from the incipit of the Latin version of the text. The text of the canticle is taken from the Gospel of Luke (1:46–55) where it is spoken by Mary upon the occasion of her Visitation to her cousin Elizabeth. Here we come a-wassailing
Among the leaves so green
Here we come a-wand'ring
So fair to be seen
Here we come a-wand'ring
So fair to be seen

We are not daily beggars
That beg from door to door
But we are neighbours' children
Whom you have seen before
But we are neighbours' children
Whom you have seen before

Love and joy come to you
And to you a wassail too
May God bless you and send you a Happy New Year
May God bless you and send you a Happy
A Happy New Year

Our wassail cup is made
Of the rosemary tree
And so is your beer
Of the best barley
And so is your beer
Of the best barley

Love and joy come to you
And to you a wassail too
May God bless you and send you a Happy New Year
May God bless you and send you a Happy
A Happy New Year

Call up the butler from this house
Put on his golden ring
Let him bring us up a pint of beer
And better we shall sing

Love and joy come to you
And to you a wassail too
May God bless you and send you a Happy New Year
May God bless you and send you a Happy
A Happy New Year

Hello, Good master and good mistress
While you're sitting by the fire
Pray think of us poor children
Who are wandering in the mire
Pray think of us poor children
Who are wandering in the mire

Love and joy come to you
And to you a wassail too
May God bless you and send you a Happy New Year
May God bless you and send you a Happy
A Happy New Year
