With roots from Jordan and Armenia- I am American With the name عيسى مشربش Wait a second Although that doesn't sound American I am pleased to say that these foreign names have made their way through the fabric and heartbeat of the USA You see, my Middle Eastern and Asian heritage used to make me feel a little less American But I love America and I'm proud of it The opportunities in America are remarkably empowering If you really want to, you can make it and breakthrough Even if they hate you, and despite the odds that may stack up against you Injustice isn't an excuse to fail, but could be the fuel to inspire you to prevail And I speak the truth to this because I'm living proof of it You see, the American Dream is for those that push through to it My life is unusually beautiful and though I'm new to this I can definitely get I'm used to it But I got to say, my early days weren't actually this great I was faced with the reality of hate When I arrived to the States in 1998 as 12 year old boy I took a deli job, underage with a boss that wouldn't hesitate To slap me across the face if I didn't perform exactly his way And one day, hurried back from a delivery, didn't want to be late But got jumped by a young mob, thought I was getting robbed If they took the delivery money, I might lose this job But it wasn't about the money, they wanted to teach me a lesson Nearly killed me, so I can never forget their message One of the boys got closer and spoke into my ear "Go back to your country! we don't want you here!" Why the xenophobia? will it ever change? Telling me to go back to my country is like asking me to start again Back to seventh grade after finishing college on graduation day Imagine I let it pain or ever let it shame Before I ever cave lies ahead some better days Maybe xenophobia can turn into xenomania someday I got to revive my faith and see beyond today And by the way I'm still in love with the USA So I made the better choices that America lays out Embraced a work ethic and outworked my way out To a bright future, with my eyes on God I could go back to my country, or stay and defy all odds But until then, I hold on to the inscription on Lady Liberty The New Colossus, opening opportunities to the least of these So I penned down a new book called Go Back to your Country To add to the stories that reveal the beauty out of the ashes of the immigrant journey And I invite you to join me Because it's not over
