They'd wake up in the middle of the night
A father and his precious only son 
Together they would huddle by the lamp 
Together they would learn the holy words 

And the boy felt warm
And the boy felt love
And the boy felt peace
And the boy felt joy

One night when they were huddled by the lamp
The father saw his only son was cold
The sight of his son shivering in the night
Just broke the loving father's heart in two

The father said my precious precious son,
I'll  have to leave our learning for a while
To seek our fortune on the open road
To find the means to heat our humble home

The boy said father please don't go

A month then six then twelve passed quickly by
The son continued learning on his own
But sometimes in the night he'd start to cry
Just aching for his father to come home

The son said Father please come home

One night when it was dark and it was cold
He heard a muffled knocking at the door
He ran and quickly pulled back on the latch
His father fell in tumbling to the floor

The son cried Father you are home
Father
Oh dear Father you are cold
Father

The father's face was pale and gray as ash
His hands and feet were blue and cold as ice
They covered him and placed him on the bed
His son clung to his hand and kissed his head

And the boy felt warm
And the boy felt love
And the boy felt peace
And the boy felt joy

As the color slowly crept back to his face
The father weakly smiled and said dear son 
In my pack you'll find a shining bar of gold
Enough to heat our home for years to come

Then the father closed his eyes and spoke no more
His son let go and crumpled to the floor

The son cried father please don't go
