Do you mind if I stand?
Because kneeling is too traumatic
And I am not comfortable with being that close to the ground
I thank you for health life and strength
My earnest plea is that you would
Protect my health from toxic thoughts
Guard my life against the attacks of blue brutality
And bring strength to this hopeless soul
I have not lost faith in you
Just questioning creation
You told me would not put more on us than we could bare
How strong do you think we are?
Carrying this weight on our backs
Targets on our chests
And anxiety in our minds
My emotions are strained from the balancing act
Maintaining happiness on the outside
While enraged on the inside
God I need some clarity
Because this is not what I imagined when you promised me life abundantly
Or are they on assignment from the enemy?
You said vengeance would be yours
But I got the tab this time
I wanna repay
Retribution sounds good
And the fire in my belly has created an appetite for justice
Since it's just us
I pray
That our emotions don't fade away as weeks go on
I pray
That looting somehow turns into legislation
I pray
That the last breath of George Floyd, Ahmed Aubrey, Breonna Taylor, and all my fallen brothers and sisters breathes life into this revolution
I pray
That my lighter-skinned counterparts will stand beside us and cry aloud and expose this nation's transgressions
I pray
That we would not be led into the temptation of mainstream media
And deliver us from evil plots of systematic racism
I pray
The blue code of silence
Would sing with a harmony of liberty
I pray
That traffic stops
Don't turn into premature tombstones
I pray
That the next time we talk
I am in a better mood
I'm just sick of feeling this way
And you told me that you are touched by my feelings and infirmities
I come empty
I gave you my last
Just prepare me for the new day
Pour hope into this vessel
Tell me I am loved
Breathe life into this temple
Because I refuse to let this world take it away
