Caught a BNSF from Sandpoint and I'm going east 
Don't quite know where it's headed
My map's a little blurry, or it might be my eyes
But I'm nothing if not levelheaded

Well I found a deep well and hopped on in
Collapsed on the floor in a heap
There was a little man sitting across from me
And he serenaded me as I fell asleep

And catch a glimpse of the other side

I dreamed of those who hopped before
The ones Guthrie sang about
And I heard the voice of Stobe above
Telling me he's gotta catch out

I woke an hour out from Shelby with a killer headache
My ears were rattling in my brain
And I swore that I heard voices in the clangor
Stories of lives gone down the drain

So put your ear to the steel rail humming
And catch a glimpse of the other side

Well that's not gonna be me, I say
As we parallel Route 2
And we fly by towns that have been in the red for decades
Empty shells of the life they once knew

And there's a beauty in the atrophy, I think to myself
