Within the blink of an eye

I sip apple cider all alone
I take myself on carnival rides
I never would've guessed
I'd be here raking leaves without you by my side

And as the goldfinch eats the ripe sunflower seeds
And the sycamores release their scarlet leaves
And the teenage tadpoles rustle in the reeds
I ache for you
Though I know you're never coming back to me

You were like a waterfall of stories
I was like a wishing well
I clung to you so fiercely even as we lost all of our chlorophyll
The blustering breeze is painted red and white with fallen leaves and thistledown
I was born among the brambles and the thorns, but I am soft and gentle now

And as September melts into October
And as we pray this year will soon be over
And with every autumn breeze we all get older

Less and less each day

As I walk the line dividing love and fear
I let the chilly pastel twilight draw me near
As I watch the maple branches become bare

And the past is even farther off than Saturn
Making snow angels in dark matter
