Where have I been?
Well, I could ask you
Where have you been?
Sitting here now
With your fat Sachertorte and that grin
I know I was supposed to meet you at Stephansplatz
Instead, as you've no doubt surmised
I got lost in Vienna

Earlier I had been inside the cathedral
Where Mozart was married and
Years later, carried from
At St Marx, where you can visit his marker but not his grave
It's true, he too was lost in Vienna

I went to the Friedhof to see
The great composers' graves
Beethoven, Schubert and yes, Salieri
They rest by the main gate but I had got turned round coming in
So I entered the wrong gate
That's me, still lost in Vienna

The section I walked through was scattered
With gravestones that had been shattered
They had lain that way since 1938
And they stay that way now
When there are no descendants to tend them
Too much, so much lost in Vienna

Once I found my way back to town
I saw Figarohaus
Where Mozart wrote - oh, yes, I see that you know.
I must have spent over an hour
Looking at coats and Klaviers and clocks
As easy as falling in love
To get lost in Vienna

By then it was dark
And I finally got back to Stephansplatz
Remembering how the cathedral roof in the day
Looked like the November leaves in the Friedhof 
Gold and brown and green and even gray

So where were you?
Even Mozart had an excuse
He, like me, was hopelessly, artlessly, utterly, perfectly finally
Lost in Vienna
