Six bucks in my pocket, a long way to go Tryin' to hitch a ride out of San Diego When out of the night came a beautiful sight A Coup Deville convertible gleaming chrome and white I jumped into the back seat grateful for the ride I could not believe my luck when I saw who was inside A picture-perfect couple from the California sun She was a blond perky surfer girl, seemed kinda' young Her boyfriend was a clean-cut dude, could have been a star He turned and passed a joint, asked if I was going far I said I'm heading east to Michigan, Detroit city bound I'm getting low on cash and tired of traveling 'round I asked where they were going and could I cop a ride They smirked a private smile then she cuddled to his side He turned round to me, his smile a cryptic grin The toll you pay on the devil's road depends upon your sins He said, We're going to Nevada I gotta ditch this ride Then we're heading north to Canada to make this child my bride We stole this car from her mom, and then we left Now I'm AWOL from the navy and wanted for grand theft How was I to know I took the wrong damn road How was I to know I took the wrong damn road So we drove on to the desert, the stars lit up the night We're going to my daddy's ranch, we own the mineral rights If you need to make some money to see you on your way He could always use a hired hand, he'll pay you by the day The highway started fading to a two lane country road The road became the desert, but that caddy hardly slowed The only sign posts were the cactus and the stars to guide the way Then the sun began rising and the dawn became the day Rising from the desert shimmering in the heat I thought I saw some buildings, and some guys on ATV's Old rusty trailers and a dusty horse corral The sailor said we made it, welcome to The Chaparral He led me to the foreman who asked if I could ride Of course, I'm great with horses, I smiled as I lied We claim a million acres so you'll need to the ride the fence Two weeks in the saddle, once around for maintenance So they put me in the saddle, I asked my horse's name That grizzled old cowboy laughed, I felt a twinge of shame He said when you get back, if you get back of course The only name you'll have for him is that goddamn horse How was I to know I took the wrong damn road How was I to know I took the wrong damn road Now I'm riding through the dessert the cowboy wished me luck That sailor and his girlfriend ditched the caddy for a truck Two weeks in the saddle, round a million acre spread The pay is good, five bucks a day, free meals and a bed Now I'm riding round in circles god damn horse my only friend Not sure where I'm goin or where it's going to end It's time to find another road before it is too late It's time to find a better road that leads me to my fate Sometimes you take a highway with no off ramp You try and change direction, but you find that you can't The road is going nowhere, so you must escape It's time to find a better road that leads you to your fate How was I too know, I took the wrong damn road How was I to know I took the wrong damn road How was I to know I took the wrong damn road
