The streets were dark in Bethlehem, when the man and woman came
The hour was late, the only room they found
Was the room below where the cattle slept, all lit by torches' flame
And he laid their cloaks down on the dusty ground

And there, a baby boy was born, In a borrowed cattle stall
His mother wrapped him up and laid him there
Upon the straw in the feeding trough He looked so very small
Whilst the world slept on uncaring, unaware

No trumpets rang in the night-time air
No happy crowds in the square
Not a sound in the empty streets, forlorn
None on earth to greet his coming

And so a babe was born to the world And he drew his breathe to cry

Just a mother's love as she held him tight As the stars shone in the sky

Glory shone even brighter than the dawn
Angels sang to greet his coming
