Listen. This happened long, long ago going back several generations. This happened in a place not found on a map. A place unknown, mysterious, but it really happened. There in the village lived a wealthy merchant. He travelled the world on his ship selling things and became very successful. He became the richest man in the village. There were more than thirty large safes in his mansion. They were full of gold and precious stones. There hung beautiful paintings on the walls. Parked on the large front yard were several large carriages. He was rich beyond measure. But what was most precious to him were his six sons and six daughters. My children, I brought you the new clothes you wanted and the fluffiest chocolate cakes. Could anyone be any happier? He had all the money in the world and twelve beautiful children. Then one day, something terrible happened. There was a huge fire at the house. Fire, fire! Run to safety everyone. A little spark of fire from a burning candle turned into a blaze of fire. People in the village tried to put out the fire to no avail. As a result, everything burned---. safes and precious stones altogether. A powerful typhoon struck his merchant ships and they all sank to the bottom of the sea. Everything just disappeared in the blink of an eye. All his friends deserted him. Not one person came to help him. He became the poorest person overnight and the only thing he had left was an old shack. Merchant How could this have happened? Why me? The merchant was devastated but there was nothing he could do. He started his new life, with his twelve children, in the old shack. His children had to work the field. They had to clean after themselves. Servants no longer cooked and served food for them. The children reminisced about their glorious past. They complained everyday and bickerings were frequent. Well, not everyone. Rose, one of the twelve, was different. She enjoyed cleaning, doing chores, and found ways to help others. Father! Take a look! Buds have sprouted from the seeds we put down a few days ago. Arent they pretty? Do you hear the birds chirping? Let me bring you some tea. Rose was the merchants pride and joy. Rose was a great daughter. Neighborhoods Look, theres Rose. Isnt she beautiful? I like her a lot. Everyone in the village liked Rose for her bright personality and kind heartedness.
