Zoe Speaks

Zoe Speaks consists of Kentuckians Mitch Barrett and Carla Gover, their daughter, fiddler/bassist/vocalist Zoey Barrett, and her multi-instrumentalist husband Arlo Barnette, who draw on their deep roots in the region to put their own spin on everything from traditional ballads to finely-crafted originals. Close family harmonies are a defining feature of their sound, and while their music is drenched in the flavor of the mountain music they grew up with, they skirt the cutting edge of tradition. Their music follows in the tracks of socially conscious Kentucky writers like Jean Ritchie and John Prine, with a distinctly progressive bent. Viola pops her bubblegum
Wears her dress way too short
She ain’t tryin’ to be a tease
Can’t help it if you find it pleasin’, Lord, Lord

Truckers say, “How is it you look so fine this early in the mornin’?”
She says, “Honey, I been here since last night at nine.”
Tops off the coffee, winks a little warning
Viola, Viola, Viola, wait on me

I know it’s not politically correct
But I would give my paycheck
Just to see you
Walk across the floor

Some folks they get their news
From the morning paper or the idiot tube
I get mine straight from the horse’s mouth
Ain’t no secrets in this town
Viola, who’s shootin’ who?
Petty tyrants and greedy fools
We got more important things to talk about
Besides, they always leave the good news out
Viola, Viola, Viola, wait on me

You can’t just walk into any fast-food place
And expect to be greeted by this angel’s face
It might be convenient, it might be fast
But when it comes to hospitality, don’t ask
How’m I doin’? Doin’ fine.
Y’all come back now, you hear?
Viola, Viola, Viola, wait on me

I know it’s not politically correct
But I would give my paycheck
Just to see you
Walk across the floor
She says, “Behave yourself honey, and I might bring you some more…”

Viola pops her bubblegum
Wears her dress way too short
She ain’t tryin’ to be a tease
Can’t help it if you find it pleasin’, Lord, Lord
