Jack Dawkins, better known as the Artful Dodger, is a character in Charles Dickens's 1838 novel Oliver Twist. The Dodger is a pickpocket, so called for his skill and cunning in that occupation. He is the leader of the gang of child criminals on the streets of London, trained by the elderly Fagin. The term has become an idiom describing a person with skilful deception. more »

Bad habit can't quit it like an addict
High pitched, weak, it's unintimidating
All of my words seem to sound self-denigrating

Predisposed for pain, not pleasure
Taught that suffering's the source of each man's measure
But suffering from no purpose that's misery's recipe
Seek a better way, one that sets you free

I don't follow directions, I'm tapping into truth
Talking all of these lessons, I give 'em to the youth
I can prove it, no kid should ever feel excluded
Can't eliminate the hate, but bet I can dilute it

Who reject the path and all of its standards

I guess I'll have to take a little more ownership
Choose to lose a few friends, embark on a solo trip
I'd get accused of arrogance maybe showmanship
But I'm just doing me and that feels so legit

Is a life without freedom really even living?
I know a gift with no love is not a form of giving
So if I believe that making music is my purpose
Then there's no time for fear, need to find some extra courage

And I'll nourish every soul that ever felt neglected
Go viral but skip that inhumane infection
Watching while the whole world is changing
If you and I are different then our conversations more engaging

You and I can share perspective and then we start reframing
The ways in which we see the world and where the other's aiming
And blessed with more knowledge, more compassion
We might make a better world, imagine if that happened

And we could be on stage, everybody's clapping
Just being us, no accents or acting
We'll rise above all the static and the noise
And see what it feels like to really use our voice

For now, that's the dream I'm holding onto
