The rain began to fall just as the school bus pulled away
One last call good-bye and she sent him on his way
Her youngest child's first day of school; the rain helped disguise her tears
As she bowed to pray she'd find a way to help disguise her fears

It's the first time in eleven years she's in this house alone
Some brandy in her coffee, turns off her telephone
Then she goes up to the attic where her memories have aged
She finds her high school yearbook, sits down and turns the page
Familiar faces she'd forgotten that she knew
Smiling back from when their dreams were all brand new
Familiar traces of the girl she used to be
The girl her class had eagerly agreed was far away most likely to succeed

Twenty years had passed by since those memories were penned
The notice in the mail had said they're gathering again
So she spent the whole day sifting through forgotten souvenirs
And echoes of the words she'd heard came drifting through the years
'Cause ever since she was in pigtails it seemed her life was planned
For living other people's dreams, her future packed and canned
From champion of the spelling bee, on through Homecoming Queen
They told her she'd be going far, they called it destiny
Familiar voices she'd hear everywhere she turned
Each one telling of the future that she'd earned
Familiar choices, all the things that she could be
But they weren't the things she'd ever really need
To be the girl they called most likely to succeed

Well she married out of high school to everyone's surprise
It's what she knew she had to do to make them realize
That love, a home, a family were all she'd ever need
It didn't take that much to be most likely to succeed
Then she thought about the man she's loved for richer and for poor
He stole her heart when he was only just the boy next door
She was counting up her blessings when the bus turned up the road
Then she heard her children's laughter and the front door slamming closed
Familiar faces looking up into her own
It makes her smile to think how much that they've all grown
She used to wonder, now she finally agrees
They got it right when everyone believed she was far and away most likely to succeed
Yeah they got it right when everyone agreed
She was the girl they'd call most likely to succeed
