It really wasn't time to go
But I'd already packed my bags
Train's pulling up the tracks
Heaving from the weight of the load
Waiting to take me very far away
Been travelling like a ghost
To every new city I'm lost
To every new tongue I'm tied
To every new scene I'm left behind
Waiting to leave when I can hardly stay
So sullen with the sun in my eyes
Just half the way from here to home
Down here just to stretch my legs
Just a transient waiting to go
Four more hours before it's time to show
Now we're here to just make sure
That we're going to sound alright
But the engineer's half-awake
Still tired from the night before
Everyone's tired but the show must go on
Once soundcheck's over and done
There's still some hours to kill
So you head back to the hotel
Catch a power nap and then some food
And maybe a glimpse of another neighbourhood
Soon we're backstage getting the nerves
My mind's in a travelling fog
Avoiding everybody's gaze
Avoiding any small talk
Five minutes more to curtain call
And the sets they go down well
So high I can hardly tell
From the lights and their dizzying spell
From the applause, my nerves were quelled
Then it's down to the booth, there's merch to sell
And the audience is made up of friends of friends
Just waiting to be seen at the show
Most of them are friends of the other bands
And they're not really there to see you
And they don't really dig your music too
Because lip service is the thing to do
The food's now tasting the same
It's a blur all these faces and names
Maybe I'm at the end of my game
Maybe I just want to go home
So tired but I can't sleep so soon
Lying awake
A stranger in a strange room
So I'm up at four a.m.
I slept for just an hour or two
It really wasn't time to go
But it's a good time to hit the road
So pack it in the van the tour must go on
We're here just to peddle our wares
An excuse to travel and tour
Such a privileged thing to do
Selling you miracles
Who do we fool?
When we still have bills to pay back home
Woe to my travelling blues
Woe to my travelling blues
Woe
