Tell you about a True story that happened a couple weeks back Over emotional, trembling in my knee caps I'm leaving Whataburger. Fry Rd, what a joy The chickens at their moms, so I'm with Jenny and the boy And as we dip up out the drive thru, we decide to turn right And there's a homeless man standing right there with a sign I check my wallet but no cash. Got me feeling kind of strapped Got an extra water by accident, maybe he'll like that? Now, I feel like an asshole with a couple bags of food Offering a free cup of water just seems fucking rude But I'm a piece of shit, for sure, it's been this way for a while So I opened up that door with a cup and a smile "Hey sir, I got you some water, I'm sorry it's something small" He says, "th-thank you so much! anything helps at all" He seems genuinely happy as he reaches in to get it It's a red light so we decide let's chop it up a minute He starts it out like, "Hey my name is Stephen, holy shit, you're huge Got a couple inches on me, and I'm like six foot two" And as we start to yap and yap, yo, two things come to mind "He's got great fucking teeth and he's like as old as I am" And then a bulb above my head, it begins to illuminate "Now you said Stephen, with a 'V' or was that with a 'PH?'" He seems confused but he answers, "it's the latter, no 'V'" Had me thinking to myself, "yo, I don't fucking believe" "Hey Stephen, how old are you man? ..Like thirty or thirty one" He said, "yeah I just turned thirty, w- w- why you wonder-un?" I said "Yo, I think we used to play little-league by the gardens Names Kody, eighth grade, we played together on the Marlins And then his face lit up, and you could tell that he recalled "It must have been like 17 years ago this fall" And the feeling this moment brought, it meant more than I can sing But our reunion cut short when that light flipped green And as I got back up in the car, my wife and kid sat still And the weight of that moment, it finally felt real Cuz Stephen seemed so glad to see me, we were never even homies Ayo, I sunk in my drivers seat cuz for real that shit broke me So many thoughts and emotions, but we'll try and keep it quick Real talk, I used to treat that kid Stephen like shit I used to bully and tease him, like almost on the daily Not surprised he remembered me, I'm surprised he didn't hate me Because Stephen used to act out, he had the mouth of a gutter But the butt of Stephen's teasing was that constant st- stutter We used to mock and laugh, repeat when he talked back Bunch of pieces of shit that thought we were all that And not a single one of us had the heart to say "enough" Now to see him like that, yo, no cap, it was tough Never forget before I left, the last phrase that he uttered He looked me right inside my eyes, "it was "great to see you b-b-br-brother"
