Midnight Oil

Midnight Oil (also known informally as "The Oils" to fans), were an Australian alternative rock band from Sydney originally performing as Farm from 1972 with drummer Rob Hirst, bass guitarist Andrew James and keyboard player/lead guitarist Jim Moginie. While vocalist Peter Garrett was studying at Australian National University in Canberra, he answered an advertisement for a spot in Farm, and by 1975 the band was touring the east coast. By late 1976, Garrett moved to Sydney to complete his law degree, and Farm changed its name to Midnight Oil by drawing the name out of a hat. more »

Standing in the house of the founding fathers
It's a house that's not been well looked after
Now there's a fatal flaw in the mighty rafters
There's a rule of law written by the cotton masters

I took my place at the Murray darling chamber
I saw no friendly face, I was a stranger
There was a secret plan, a plan to hasten slowly
There was a show of hands, and I was on my only

No other place on Earth
No other place on Earth
(Haha, uh, ow, ooh)

What you see is an act of terror
The bush surrenders to the ball and chain
As the world becomes one, the country comes undone

High as the banks of the darling river
Dry as the bed of the inland sea
As the world becomes one, the country comes undone

Hard as the rocks of the endless gibber
Deep as the roots of the Mallee tree
As the world becomes one
The country comes undone

All that's left is a tiny glimmer
Of the days when the river was running free
As the world becomes one, the country comes undone

Who left the bag of idiots open?
Who drank the bottle of bad ideas?
Who drew the last drop from the bottom?
Good people, good people are forgotten

Let's shake some truth out of the jar
Let's kick the crooks out of the kitchen
We'll tell some stories at the bar
Good people, good people are forgotten

Sister Mary plays her mystery train
In a town at the end of a railway line
Sister Mary plays her mystery train
In a town at the end of the railway line

So shake some truth out of the jar
It's a battle of blurry edges
There's a famine of compassion
Good people, good people are forgotten
Good people, good people are forgotten
Good people, good people are forgotten

Good people, good people are forgotten
Good people, good people are forgotten
Good people, good people are forgotten
Good people, good people are forgotten
Good people are forgotten
