Eikthyrnir

Eikþyrnir (Old Norse: [ˈɛikˌθyrnez̠], "oak-thorny") or Eikthyrnir, is a stag which stands upon Valhalla in Norse mythology. The following is related in the Gylfaginning section of Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda after the description of Heiðrún. Brodeur follows the text of the T manuscript of the Prose Edda in putting the stag í Valhöll, "in Valhall", rather than á Valhöll, "upon Valhall", as the other manuscripts do. The more recent translation by Anthony Faulkes puts the stag on top of the building, which seems much more natural from the context and weight of the evidence. Snorri's source for this information was almost certainly Grímnismál, where the following strophes are found. more »

And so the wicked came to lead him from his home
Through leveled trees and trampled pastures, the ruins he would roam
But still they want for more, to build their war machine
And yet a soul doth rise from lustful eyes unseen

They care not for the wondrous, the beauty of the earth
But good will rise from within his heart
To save them from themselves, and to see his home's rebirth

Gone my sacred home, men they have forsaken Gaia
Embers all around, scorch the fallen trees with fire
Sack the war brigades, they will pay in death and their own
Blood will fill the cracks of the soil and grow the trees anew

Born in men a hunger, wasted on their warfare
They consume each other, shackled in deceit
Now I stalk unspoken through the swamps and mires
Through the twisted trees, this land shall be set free

Wandering alone, my friends the trees have all been hacked
Away the soldiers march, to attack their brothers with the
Wood and steel they mined, raping lands to further their own
Greed will be the end of this wondrous land that gave us life

Life they care not of it, lest it be for profit
Brother killing brother, will it never cease?
I will not be silenced as our home is squandered
Their fortress shall be breached, this land shall be set free

I will journey to their castle, to the fortress of the damned
They will pay for their destruction of this wondrous magic land
Through the forests and the rivers, and the valleys once were green
I would die to save my homeland from the human hands of greed

To the houses of our fathers, on the land we lived and died
Our spirits live together, holy is the earth and sky
When we hate and kill our sisters, to our fate will come the end
I would journey on forever to be brothers once again

"We hold the secret, we hold the truth
God is with us now and our power is our proof
Surrender to us now for we are in control
You may be saved yet if you just give up your soul"

Can you not see true beauty that lies here?
You waste the gifts of Gaia, you're blind from hate and fear
To claim the truth is fruitless, your god is naught but lies
Control is an illusion and your hubris your demise

For the brave and for the true, we will fight the hate
Of the tyrant's righteous war, so to seal our fate

"To your wretched hall steel and fire did we bring
Of your sacred forest bards of lore shall never sing
We'll slay the heathen tribes, and the trolls we'll lock in chains
God shall lead my rule until the savior comes again"

If you kill me now, only sorrow will you bring
To kill a man is to kill the rivers and the trees
I'll sail beyond the sunset to the land of evermore
The earth will be my master, the forest and the storm

For the brave and for the true, we will fight the hate
Of the tyrant's righteous war, so to seal our fate
For the wisdom and the light, for the sacred wood
There's a fire in our souls, so to use for good

And so the brave troll did battle that day
The blood of his foes the ground it did stain
Their ships sailed away, their towers did fall
As vengeance was had by the guardian of old

The king was dethroned and his armies were slain
Great Gaia's fair lands were cleansed in the rain
Their halls washed away, their pride was brought low
Their god as a false wicked tyrant was shown

And still do the bards of lore to this day
Sing of our hero the troll's epic lay
That day did we hear peace and freedom's call
As the fortress of kings did fall
