We stand proud and ignorant
We build our monuments in the dark
To those we failed to save
The road to death paved with regards

Writing words in sacred blood
Writing their own names on the base
I want to denounce it
I want to destroy it

But here I'm begging him not to die
Alone in an ill stranger's bed
Drifting in and out of consciousness
He can't become a name on a monument

Just like the one we remember every year
Never again to return to us
His silver voice always on our lips.
Our sins of blood draped upon his pall

I knew none of his many devils
And as I send my apologies
I write my name in blood
The final name on the cenotaph

May this ignorance be shown
May this guilt never cease
For I knew exactly what I did
And what I didn't do
