My friend That word does not even begin to describe our relationship Blood thicker than water Blood running deep I never understood that saying until I looked back on my life growing up alongside you. When we were younger we would play hide and seek at our grandparents' house during holiday gatherings After hiding for nearly an hour we would finally come out from where we were joyful at winning the game when in reality our family members told us to hide and never came searching so that they might find a moment of peace and quiet away from the children We were none the wiser high fiving and praising one another for our wit and cunning hiding between an overcoat and a button-down shirt in the spare closet of my grandfather's study We threw frisbees at cans competing using a scoring system like horseshoes And after you won we ran around the streets with our shirts off screaming silently so as not to wake the neighbors at 2 AM We threw frisbees accidentally hitting streetlights shattering them on the roof of your sister's car and kept it a secret for years You hid the shards in the back floorboard of your car We helped each other through the tough times crying together mourning losses and missing memories We stayed strong for the others and broke in private each of us individually dealing with how we were feeling and discussing it later The good times The stories The regrets Nana's laugh cuts through the tension as she makes a joke that probably shouldn't be made at this time Like rain falling when you were a kid and the only thing you wanted to do was play outside but you grew to love the water for the way it allows you to play in the mud As boys do I look to you for how to react and you laughed You helped me not take myself so seriously all of the time and taught me to enjoy the minor moments instead of letting them pass by unnoticed They should be enjoyed Life is beautiful despite all of its crap because of those minor moments I miss our late night conversations about girls and psychology and music and theology and superheroes And yes I still think Andrew Garfield is the best Spider-Man You were my rock through so many tough times in my life without you even knowing it Spidey could learn a thing or two from you Heroism is seen in the mundane just as it is seen in the miraculous In the random text conversations asking for advice when the beliefs that were foundational to my being began to shake just as in an epic brawl between a super powered being and his enemies And no my faith would not be what it is today if not for you prescribing Mere Christianity to me at sixteen years old as if it were a medication to combat the borderline deism that hovered over my mind Be it a web head or a theologian you were always what I needed in my darkest moments In a time when superheroes were nonexistent you were the closest representation of one I had seen Spider-Man inspired a world but you inspired me and my world would not be the same without you Granddad shuffles from the hardwood floor in the kitchen to the living room carpet as I sit watching the movie And Seeing him on the screen Says Peter Parker looks like you I agree I have always thought that Andrew resembled you too
