A star above the camp site darts ninety degrees
And then descends to the valley
Where jessica had pitched her three-color tent, singing "la-la-la-la-la-la-la"

She blinks away the image of a tall bald man
Who she'd once seen at the town laundromat
She screamed as his face dissolved into space
As she rose in the air, singing, "la-la-la-la-la..."

Up into the mothership as if she were on an acid trip
But she'd never done that, she was afraid to try
Given her twitches, her reticence, her 20/200 eyesight

Her host, eight feet tall, vaguely humanoid
Every inch exuding, extruding schadenfreude
Broad head and blowhole, back fin and flippers
Clawed hands like garden clippers
Clipping, "la-la-la-la-la..."

Spongy snacks smell of peanut and cognac
Aquatic tanks filled with blooming algae
She lollygags at the window and counts constellations
An electric shock to her ankle band demands that she focus on the task at hand
Ink blots and photos of robots - as per request
She is to put them in order from worst to best
She is uncertain; she curses, the blowhole head turns

Pets of some sort cavort in the corner; they paw at yarn
One of them looks like the bald guy from the laundromat
Were they being converted? she is uncertain; again she curses
Another ankle band shock, and jessica goes out
And then she's falling down through clouds

She awakens in her sleeping bag, the tent zipper wide open
She runs through the camp site, gray and misty at twilight
She finds the bald guy from the laundromat
Stands on tip toe and kisses him on the forehead
And hugs his neck and whispers
"I thought they had converted you to an alien pet"

Up into the mothership as if she were on an acid trip
But she'd never done that, she was afraid to try
Given her twitches, her reticence, her 20/200 eyesight
