ONCE upon a time there lived a poor widow who had an only son named Jack. They were very poor. They had sold nearly everything they owned to buy food except for the cow.
“Never mind, ” said Jack. “We’ll sell the cow,” and away he went to the market.

Can you see Jack riding on the back of the cow?

Jack soon came across a butcher.
“I am off to sell the cow.” said Jack

“I will give you these magic beans in exchange for your cow,” said the butcher
“Done!” cried Jack, who ran all the way home to tell his mother how lucky he had been.

“Stupid boy, now we have nothing!” she was very angry.
She threw the beans out of the window.

In the morning a great beanstalk had grown, which stretched up to the sky.
Jack decided to climb the beanstalk.

Suddenly there was a beautiful maiden standing beside him.

She told him how his father had been killed by a giant who lived in the castle, and how his mother, in order to save Jack, had to promise never to tell the secret.

“All that the giant has is yours,” she said, and then disappeared into thin air.

As he got near the castle, he heard the giant and he decided to hide
He roared out:

“Fee, fi, fo, fum,

I smell the blood of an Englishman;

Be he alive, or be he dead,

I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!”

“Wife, bring me my money-bags.” The Giant’s wife brought him two full bags of gold, and the giant counted his money. He was so sleepy that he began to snore. Jack crept out of hiding, stole the two bags, and went down the beanstalk.

Jack and his mother were now rich;

Sometime later Jack went back up to the top of the beanstalk again.
Again he heard,

“Fee, fi, fo, fum,

I smell the blood of an Englishman;

Be he alive, or be he dead,

I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!”

The Giant called out, “Wife, bring the little brown hen!” The giantess went out and brought in a little brown hen.

“Lay!” said the giant; and the hen started to lay golden eggs.
“That will do for to-day,” and stretched himself out to go to sleep.
 Jack crept out of his hiding place, snatched the little brown hen and climbed as fast as he could down the beanstalk.

Jack became richer.
Sometime later Jack went back up the beanstalk.

As he got near the castle again he heard,
“Fee, fi, fo, fum,

I smell the blood of an Englishman;

Be he alive; or be he dead,

I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!”

When the giant had finished his breakfast, he called out: “Wife, bring me the golden harp!” So she placed it on the table. “Sing!” said the giant; and the harp began to sing the most beautiful songs that ever were heard.

 It sang so sweetly that the giant soon fell fast asleep; then Jack crept quietly out of his hiding place, seized the golden harp.
But the giant woke up in time to see Jack climbing down the beanstalk.

 The giant began chasing Jack down the beanstalk;

Jack shouted to his mother,

“Mother, bring me an axe!” and the widow hurried out with a chopper.
 Jack cut the beanstalk right in two.
CRASH!

Down fell the giant, dead!
Jack and his mother grew very rich, and lived happily ever after.
