Tall tales, quips and songs of one fine clown Were spread to moors and dales all around Balls, wolves and trees he could juggle While moving to and fro without struggle He could make you laugh on a battlefield As you try to survive by being concealed So one king called him to his fort And introduced him to his court He looked around with a thin smile Maybe it was worth going the extra mile He swayed the crowd on the first act By the end he already signed the contract Oh, it's not that easy to act like a fool For their existence can be rather cruel But never respected nor truly befriended Especially if the fun is unintended He had the audience in the palm of his hand He was both thespian and a one-man-band Whether they saw a simpleton or the knave Guffaws and cheers hit like a heat wave Then he sealed his fate by provoking The king's counsellors in big charcoal cloaking It ain't easy to act like a fool When you crave for the taste of misrule Unlike knights that fight and save Jesters are not awarded for being brave They buzzed around the king's ears like flies Ale, and tittle-tattle mixed in with lies And in his wrathful mood he sent his guards Who apprehended him to with no regard It was a matter of time before the sword fell And everyone present damned him to hell Oh, it ain't easy to act like a fool When you mock those who rule Slights, real or imagined, turn into rumours Not tolerated by hooded men with no humour After the execution, none saw him arise Dusting his body off, he escaped his demise He picked his own head and brushed his face Few witnessed him stride outside at even pace Some say he'll be back when most needed In times where laughter won't be unheeded Oh it's not easy to act like a fool Making powerful people drool Jokes instantly become conclusions That may crack into grand delusions
