I went to read my paper
It about blew me off the couch
But my 20th Century numbness
It shields me from the shock
Of all them people hurting
With their dying and distress
But thanks to my numbness
I could read the rest
I walked downtown today
And I saw a man get killed
But I figured it was only
A movie they was trying to film
The police car chorus was singin'
Of the violence and the blood
But my 20th Century numbness
It kept me from getting involved
I can't feel it
I don't even know it's there
If I see it
I really just don't care
If I hear it
I just get another dose

It keeps things
From getting too close
All my senses
Are either dulled or gone
Nothing is sacred
There is no right or wrong
All our values
Have received a lethal dose
