The Cherry Orchard

The Cherry Orchard (Russian: Вишнёвый сад, romanized: Vishnyovyi sad) is the last play by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. Written in 1903, it was first published by Znaniye (Book Two, 1904), and came out as a separate edition later that year in Saint Petersburg, via A.F. Marks Publishers. It opened at the Moscow Art Theatre on 17 January 1904 in a production directed by Konstantin Stanislavski. Chekhov described the play as a comedy, with some elements of farce, though Stanislavski treated it as a tragedy. Since its first production, directors have contended with its dual nature. I was a lonely, heartbroke soldier boy
Just looking for a lady to annoy
She said she cost a lot
But I said I just want to talk
So she got in and I began to drive
She asked me what was wrong, I said it felt hard to stay alive
She asked if I'm ok
And I didn't know what to say
So we talked about astrology
I pretended to be interested
Vacate your vacant mind
Who knows what you would find?
And go in peace, reluctantly
By faded signposts she spoke up again
"My days of joy are gone and all my love's come to an end
You're no 'Please, madam and sir' but if you're looking for an answer
Just find the one you love and who you are
Are you the kind of guy who gets a new girl at every bar?
Or are you a man who'd sing his heart out
While brandishing a ring?"
So we talked about astrology
I pretended to be interested
Vacate your vacant mind
Who knows what you will find?
And go in peace, reluctantly
We talked about astrology
So I acted like I'm interested
I dropped her at her home
And left myself firmly alone
And went in peace, reluctantly
Yeah, we talked about astrology
So I acted like I'm interested
I knew what I had to do
I had to get her back and soon
So I can breathe and let myself
Let myself see
A lady of the stars is she
Just another lonely girl to me
If I turned back around
Would she push me to the ground
Or would she be with me?
