The Bells

"The Bells" is a heavily onomatopoeic poem by Edgar Allan Poe which was not published until after his death in 1849. It is perhaps best known for the diacopic use of the word "bells." The poem has four parts to it; each part becomes darker and darker as the poem progresses from "the jingling and the tinkling" of the bells in part 1 to the "moaning and the groaning" of the bells in part 4. more »

Down there we can find some fuel for the fire
But up high the clouds keep rolling by

A pile of sticks and matches
A circle out of rocks
And rain clouds assembling up high

Slowly a pressure
Like ten heads in a row
Things that will change us
Never change

Call out to the one who lives inside us
But break down and she won't come out at all

The sky will rumble warnings
Bridges overhead
The last one is pacing in the hall

Slowly a pressure
Like ten heads in a row
Things that will change us
Never change

Slowly a pressure
Like ten heads in a row
Things that will change us
Never change
