Thomas Decker

Thomas Alexander Leighton Decker OBE (25 July 1916 – 7 September 1978) was a Sierra Leonean linguist, poet, and journalist. He is best known for his work on the Krio language and for translating Shakespeare's Julius Caesar into the Krio language. Decker argued forcefully that the Krio language was not merely a patois but a legitimate language. Because Decker argued that Krio was not a patois, his contributions and revisions to the Krio language greatly influenced and added to the revival and appreciation of the language. more »

Red Velvet was her name
Her colors drawn in the NYC Subway
There's a gas station near where the boys stole the liquor
Velvet looks out her apartment window
She wishes she didn't have to go

Bright lights and a hand down under
Hallucinations and passing out after
Velvet throws away her cigarette
Her colors on the house's floor
Tears painted on the door
Sneaking in the night
A door open
A road with a flaming trail

America's hypocrites!
Parties for the masochists!
Pitch black in the parking lot!
Words sprung!
Love no one!

Arizona's sunsets splatter the skyline with creamy yellow
LA's skyscrapers are greeters to the cheery clouds
Freedom is the priceless air that is breathed through arms and legs
He saw her standing there
Lonely at the Cafe on East 13th St
Black Pearl was his name
Black seated next to Red
He wonders what pleasure has brought all this pain
What circumstance left a trail of paint?

Two beautiful shades are splattered on the walls of grey
Black Pearl caresses this lovely medication
He's a pearl with a crack
His rage had marched through a shadeless parade
Finally, color is here to splatter with the dark
Red Velvet runs her rosy lips down a shadowy neck
Black Pearl locks a crimson corsage inside his oily dark heart
The darkness holds on like quicksand till the light comforms with a laugh
Red Velvet clinging to a soul stuck in midnight
As if she were a koala clinging to a tree
Black and Red splatter again and again
Till the bed is a painting so freshly wet
Laughs all night begging for more
Night after night till the joy is sore

Early morning
White light rips gently through the curtains
Past portraits will always mix with their new colors
Black Pearl stays entranced by euphoric dreams of seductive scarlet
Red Velvet closes the curtains
Like a cell mate who hates reminders of what she could've seen
The colors she chose to absorb instead
Sunlight wants to serve
A lock is chocked, beat, and pulled
The darkness awoken
A ghoulishly arousing hand snaps hard
A desire shouting
Black's fear returning
Roots cry black
He wasn't always this way
Red knows she needs to feel a breeze
Black is afraid he'll lose the temporary cure
A hand on a chest is felt
Persuasion is a dangerous painting
Black and Red is splattered once more
Is this all Red Velvet is meant for?
An erotic joy to burn her shades bright?
No

Sneaking in the night
Door opened
A road with a flaming trail

Ms. Crimson is coming down the alleyway
Ms. Crimson is her name and she'll burn it on your wall
A maddening revenge that zip lines right into a broken heart
Ms. Crimson will make sure you know her revolution
An evolution of violence and banners hung in the lonely winter
Ms. Crimson is on the run
A revolution struck down
The darkest black can't be fought with the darkest crimson
The shades just mix and paint all night
An orange shade
A portrait burnt in a remorseful flame
