Dymer

Dymer is a narrative poem by C. S. Lewis. He worked on this, his most important poem, as early as 1916—when still only 17 years old—and completed it in 1925. Dymer was his second published work; it was published by J. M. Dent in 1926, under the pseudonym Clive Hamilton (the writer's actual first name followed by his mother's maiden name). Lewis thought of himself as writing in the tradition of Homer, Spenser, Milton, Wordsworth, and others. George Sayer's analysis suggests that the book is about the temptation of fantasies, "the fantasies of love, lust, and power." more »

All channels at once is just static
Every echo at once is erratic
Losing their purpose, formless and worthless
I'm just spent from all cylinders firing
All this noise is becoming too tiring
I'm losing my grounding, but the speaker's still sounding

Is it all just grasping for wind
And if it is
Why's it hurt so bad when it gives
Maybe everything's a gift but I just don't get
How to hold out my hands and just live
Possibilities killing me, everything everyone's way
Its quantum mechanics and I've about had it with losing locality
With losing my way

Thought we had it all but we didn't
How can we claim to answer the infinite
If it's really true
I have yet to know half of the truth
We insist that we've tasted and seen
Says the blind to the tasteless and the goats to the sheep
It's no use
When the answer's entangled with all the abuse

Is it all just grasping for wind
And if it is
Why's it hurt so bad when it gives
Maybe everything's a gift but I just don't get
How to hold out my hands and just live
Possibilities killing me, everything everyone's way
Its quantum mechanics and I've about had it with losing locality
With losing my way

Gather round young guns there is nothing new under the sun
Everything's ever-expanding, you can't outrun decay or gun-down malaise
There are other worlds
Than these ever expanding, internally, externally, for all eternity
Eternity is something I will never see personally
I'm only able to understand infinity from the context of it forever escaping me
I can only understand it in the space of it
Haunting me in my bed when I'm falling asleep
Counting the least of these jumping into the slaughter houses like sheep
I feel like I die every time I close my eyes and dream of another life
Where am I when I dream? It's not heaven
It's hell to keep waking up in soaked sheets
Knowing the ones you love will keep marching into the machines
That men have made
They then call it beauty.
I call it what it is: Man vs Machine
The machine doesn't dream meaning
They dress her like a bride, they make her shake and scream at me
Then they make her out to be
More than an atrocity of lights, relativity, mechanical vicious and ugly
I can only grow if these hands can reach for the truth
If the truth is attached to abuse then what's the use
The bride has been dishonest about what her husband needs her to do
What her purpose is
We're too many metaphors deep to get back to the root of our entanglements
Too many back door conversations forgiven by blood
To understand truth and the weight it meant
Too much taken when we were young to get back to normalcy
Too much in our own heads to realize
We're talking to ourselves and calling it divinity
Too much of our deep dread is drenched in uncertainties
Isolated then wanting to be known
Not knowing how to make friends unless the person can make you money
You don't know how to make friends unless that person can make you money
You need forgiveness for what you've done
You never asked for forgiveness from me
I'm entangled with your abuse for all eternity
Thankfully there are other worlds than these
And I'll search for those worlds in the high desert
Illuminated by my yucca fire where I see millions of possibilities ever expanding
I'm atoms in tandem dancing free from redemptive blood
Where you can never own me

If freedom is for freedom let the "unclean" speak
Every soul entangled with both goats and sheep
Our clothes are all woven in the fabric of each
Let the channels coalesce and the static find peace
If the Judge is as holy as you claim him to be
I believe he'll fill the spaces in between you and me
I won't let you speak for me

And here we'll find our center, in the desert
In a context contained but not measured
We are body and soul not two parts but a whole
All the moth and the rust and the treasure
Relativity's giving me breath in the flesh and I'm free
It's quantum mechanics but maybe we'll manage a life in reality

Be here, be now, be free, be found
Be me, somehow, be here, be now
