The Great Beyond

"The Great Beyond" is a song by R.E.M. written for the 1999 film Man on the Moon. It was released as a single the same year for support of the film's soundtrack album. On the soundtrack, there is some dialogue from the movie at the end of the track; meanwhile, the single version is a radio edit, with the bridge omitted. "The Great Beyond" reached number three on the UK Singles Chart in January 2000, the band's highest-ever chart position in that country, and it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. It additionally became a top-20 hit in Canada, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, and Norway. The unedited version is included in two R.E.M. compilations: In Time - The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003 and Part… more »

Best believe he deserved it
He deserved everything he got when I found out what he'd done
Singlehandedly opened my eyes to the horrors I would commit
Thinking back to the time and place him sitting there with no care in the world
Blood boiled when I saw his face
My spirit left vengeance stepped in its place
Sitting on death row
Counting the cinder blocks
To take my mind as I sit in this smothered box
Rotting on death row
Behind this iron door
There is no getting out so I will sink into my violent core
Well I am I am
One in the same
With all the things that I used to hate
Well I have I have
Myself to blame
I know the body lies right where I left it
Thirty years to think of the past
Broken and alone death's supposed to be fast
My life drawn out stretched so thin
Squandered away and thrown in the pit
Delusion and confusion devour my mind
Sleeping and dreaming just to get through the time
I've gotta make peace with myself
I gave him the mercy that he didn't deserve
Sitting on death row
Counting the cinder blocks
To take my mind as I sit in this smothered box
Rotting on death row
Behind this iron door
There is no getting out so I will sink into my violent core
I can see the future
The table's cold and my body's strapped tight
The needle pierces my flesh and then into my veins
I feel the poison I relax and then close my eyes
Well I am I am
One in the same
With all the things that I used to hate
Well I have I have
Myself to blame
I know the body lies right where I left it
My mind is broken so I wonder
Was it worth it
Well I have I have
Myself to blame
I know the body lies right where I left it
