The wind roared heavy as it churned the sea Thunder clapped and lightning broke through the clouds in flashes Everything was becoming dark There was a galleon bounding up and down in the treacherous waters All aboard were shouting, heaving ropes, and bailing water The timbers made sickening groans the men had never heard before The waves grew taller, the sea impervious to their tears And the sailors, with these tears in their eyes, bailed the salty water Their bodies writhing and straining Their pride cast to the wind To save their ship or to face the treacherous depths alone But the moment of salvation never came A wave, towering high above, came down on the ship The masts were downed The decks splintered and ripped apart The men were thrown around the ragged planks, washed around their wooden cradle They were helpless They began to be overcome by the water One by one, their hands slipped beneath He took a desperate breath from the night and closed his eyes He was thinking He realised if he has thinking, he was alive His cheek was warm against sand He opened his eyes and looked around The sun was high in the sky and blinding against the blue He was in a desert He slowly lifted himself up His clothes were torn and ragged He was alone The dunes carried on as far as his eyes could see, and it was barren He put one foot in front of the other He stumbled at first, over the sand He felt the silence Apart from the soft hushing of the sand around his ankles And the sound of his own breathing, there was nothing He felt tiny against nature He walked on for hours Dune after dune To the horizon Night came He sat crossed legged and let his hands fill with the warm rain He drank the water, and it ran down his chest He lay on his back, under stars He heard scuttling behind him and turned around Over the brow of a nearby dune he saw two large pincers It was a Scorpion It had come to find him; it wanted to know him It knew him all through the night and stung him in its embraces Afterwards, he lay wasted And the morning came again He felt the heat and walked on The horizon unchanging And at night it happened and happened A Spider, A Wasp, A Snake For forty days and forty nights he wandered and was known by every poison of the desert He felt for them to begin with but began to harden to them He began to look for them On the fortieth day he saw on the horizon a man, through the mirage The poison ran from his eyes, and he was saved
