Charvaka (Sanskrit: चार्वाक; IAST: Cārvāka), also known as Lokāyata, is an ancient school of Indian materialism. It is considered as one example of the atheistic schools in the Hindu tradition. Charvaka holds direct perception, empiricism, and conditional inference as proper sources of knowledge, embraces philosophical skepticism and rejects ritualism. It was a popular belief system in ancient India.Brihaspati, a philosopher, is traditionally referred to as the founder of Charvaka or Lokāyata philosophy, although some scholars dispute this. During the Hindu reformation period in the first millennium BCE, when Buddhism was established by Gautama Buddha and Jainism was re-organized by Parshvanatha. Dear friends, I wish to declare to you in writing
Something that in life I never told you
About a hateful tyrannical and evil lie
Rooted in the silence of reasonable minds

The religions in the world
They are inventions and purely human institutions
Those who invented them used a god
For laws and commandments to be enforced

False, false mysteries, false, false solemnities and false divine worship
With the pretext of heaven, they give you a life of misery

With the excuse of another non-existent life
The imaginary penalties of an invented hell

I wish that all the great
And noble of the earth
Be hanged and strangled
With the guts of the priests
So much stupidity my dear friends
Don't be led by these hypocrites
Through these words I offer you a means
So that, if you want to, you can free yourself

All religions and political laws
Are detestable mysteries of inequity

Priests and authorities seize you
They will indoctrinate and hold you captive!

Religions do not and cannot contribute
Strong reasons or evidence of credibility
Nor the prophecies of the supposed saints
Nor their alleged acts in the name of divinity

Religion forces you to believe in absurd things
It endorses principles that disrupt nature
Allows tyranny, authorizes vexations against justice
A yoke of dominance against humanity

False, false mysteries, false, false solemnities and false divine worship
With the pretext of heaven, they give you a life of misery

With the excuse of another non-existent life
The imaginary penalties of an invented hell

I wish that all the great
And noble of the earth
Be hanged and strangled
With the guts of the priests
So much stupidity my dear friends
Don't be led by these hypocrites
Through these words I offer you a means
So that, if you want to, you can free yourself

All religions and political laws
Are detestable mysteries of inequity

I already take almost no part in what is done in the world
The dead, whom I am about to join, no longer worry about anything
So, I will finish this with nothing
I am hardly more than nothing and soon will be nothing...
