The Vaselines

The Vaselines are an alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. Formed in Edinburgh in 1986, the band was originally a duo between its songwriters Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, but later added James Seenan and Eugene's brother Charlie Kelly on bass and drums respectively from the band Secession. McKee had formerly been a member of a band named The Pretty Flowers with Duglas T. Stewart, Norman Blake, Janice McBride and Sean Dickson. "Molly's Lips" is a song by the Scottish alternative rock band The Vaselines. It first appeared on their EP "Dying for It", released in 1988.
Cover by Nirvana
The American rock band Nirvana covered the song "Molly's Lips," and it was first released as a B-side to the "Hormoaning" EP in 1992, which was exclusive to Australia and Japan.
Live Performance
Nirvana first performed their cover of "Molly's Lips" live on February 9, 1990, at Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. In some instances, they played the song live with members of The Vaselines.
Tribute
The song is a tribute to Molly Weir, a Scottish television personality who was a childhood friend of The Vaselines' lead singer, Eugene Kelly.
Re-release
Nirvana's version of "Molly's Lips" was re-released on their compilation albums "Incesticide" (1992) and "Nirvana" (2002).

Both the original and Nirvana's version share the same simple, catchy punk-pop style, with The Vaselines' original just over a minute long, and Nirvana's cover slightly longer.
Influence
Nirvana cited The Vaselines as one of their major influences, and "Molly's Lips" was one of two Vaselines songs they included on their album "Incesticide". The other song is "Son of a Gun."
Limited Physical Release
Nirvana's "Molly's Lips" was released as a limited-edition 7" vinyl, packaged with the January 1991 issue of 'Tangents' magazine in the UK.

Recognition
