Hello, again, hello
Just called to say hello
I couldn't sleep at all tonight
And I know it's late
I couldn't wait

Hello, my friend, hello
Just called to let you know
I think about you every night
When I'm here alone
And you're there at home
Hello

Maybe it's been crazy
And maybe I'm to blame
But I put my heart above my head
We've been through it all and you love me just the same
And when your not there
I just need to hear

Hello, my friend, hello
It's good to need you so
It's good to love you like I do
And I feel this way when I hear you say
Hello

Hello, my friend, hello
Just called to let you know
I think about you every night
And I know it's late but I could't wait
Hello

I have zero context of this song but my interpretation bc of tone is it’s a song where a man has already lost the love of his life but calls her incessantly as a friend. She’s past him for the parts of how the future must be. He says I’m here alone and you’re there at home...she’s in a more comfortable part of her life...but he hadn’t moved on. She either cares enough to listen again or it goes to her voice mail ( answering machine ) but certainly not enough to warrant someone using words like love, need, and think about you every night. It’s why he crafts it as “hello my friend hello, just called to let you know, I think about you every night..and I know it’s late ( important )..,and I couldn’t wait...( important )...hello.” It’s sad one sided love and recovery of the loss of it. The worst part for him is when he says “we’ve been through it all and you love me just the same, when you’re not there, I just need to hear....hello...my friend....”

My friend. Just need to hear you. It’s why i don’t think she answers or she doesn’t say anything on the phone.

And it’s hard to let go of and it makes you crazy enough to keep pecking at someone that is already moved on further than you have.
