Critical response to "Hot Sugar" was mixed; some critics praised its sound while others negatively compared it to the album's ballads. It peaked within the top 50 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs charts, as well as within the top 20 on the Hot R&B Songs chart.
