Now Kerouac was feeling low, he lit a smoke and changed the dial.
He turns to Neal and he says real slow,
"Wanna take the wheel awhile?"

Neal says, "Jack its a blacktop dream,
things are rarely what they seem."
And the silence grew and they drove on through,
due west another mile. 

On the road it gets dangerous, son,
you learn real quick or you die real young.
On the road you see soon enough, its more than just a drive.
Take no prisoners and count your time.
You could fall through a whole in the night.
But on the road is the only time you'll ever feel alive.

Now the Beats were gone with a final Howl,
by the time Big Z reached Greenwich town.
And the cafes burned and the world had turned, 
and many made their name.

Those were days of blood and steel,
before impostors took the wheel,
when the cameras flashed and the checks were cashed -
well,nothing was the same

On the road it gets dangerous, son,
you learn real quick or you die real young.
On the road you see soon enough, its more than just a drive.
Take no prisoners and count your time.

But on the road is the only time you'll ever feel alive.

So if some night the highway calls
and you find a way to climb these walls,
you'll meet the ghosts that haunt these streets.
