Jon Harris

New York-based hip-hop songwriter and producer Jon Harris creates down-to-earth tracks about his personal journey, life goals and the challenges of human connection. His poetic lyrics and conversational, emotional delivery style shed a bright, colorful light on the stories he tells and continue to move crowds during his energetic live performances. His fearless approach to crafting intricate instrumental melodies, harmonies and beats he has been inspired by modern rap and hip-hop visionaries Eminem, Kanye West, Jay-Z and J Cole. Harris’ most recent major mixtape Destiny’s Calling 2 and his upcoming debut album Who is Jon Harris demonstrate his belief in the power of words as well as his commitment to bold lyrical improvisation and to experimenting with production techniques. Harris’ passion for music began in the wide-open landscape of rap and hip-hop, the moment his brother and cousin started sharing their favorite artists. He fell in love with the many textures of these genres, and his imagination and drive to make music were ignited in a middle school music class when he was introduced to the Fruity Loops studio. Harris found a multi-track recording program that allowed him to record over beats he had dreamed up and put together his first full mixtape in ninth grade while studying writing and putting his own spin on the compound syllable style he admired in other artists’ work. From that point on, he decided he wanted to be a professional hip-hop recording artist and also to write songs and develop a command of the studio in order to produce all his own sample-free work as well as the work of other talented artists in the genre. With his feet still firmly planted in New York, Harris still stirs up inventive rhymes and brings out the subtle nuances of different instruments and sounds that keep all his tracks fresh and make each one even more compelling than the last. He continues to evolve his original music by pulling elements from progressive rock, pop and other genres and styles beyond the hip-hop universe in order to deepen his artistry. After graduating from college, he found himself frustrated by that times over-saturated music landscape and launched Living Life Our Way Entertainment, a record label and production company through which he releases his own music and, as he explains, provides other talented, developing independent artists that want to gain more visibility with “a small means to live their dreams.”

[Verse 1]
I was...
Cut from a different cloth, the last of a dying breed
The fabric's been discontinued, the last is inside of me
Leaving you speechless and feeling asthmatic when it's time to breathe
How I could take your breath away with lightning speed
Any rapper who thinks they're smoking me must be smoking rocks
They're the type that when their music drops they hope it knocks
But not me. I never use the fact the sex sells to set sales
I've always been the type to think outside the box
Always been good at math, never been a numbers guy
Guess I never gave a f*ck but now that I'm under fire
it's no wonder why when my shit drops every fucking time
My haters looking at the views hoping the numbers lie
But they don't bitch, the real difference between you and i
Is that you take your shit for granted while I take my time
To fall in love with it, I want a hit, you wanna hit
But you just want a bitch we both want something to get behind

[Chorus]
I'd put the world on my back and hope it doesn't break
I'd feel the weight of the world on my shoulders every day
I'd always go hard for the work that never seems to pay
If that's what it takes to be great, get to know me
You miss 100% of the shots you never take
I'm down to die for what I believe in for heaven sake
And I've always believed that one day Imma be great
For that I'll do whatever it takes, can you relate?

[Verse 2]
I had to take a break for my rap's sake
Just know I was never gone stop like I had bad brakes
but holy cow, looking and rap right now
reminds me how much you need me to speak freely, given what's at stake
This genre seemed collapse purpose, it turned into a rap circus
filled with clowns who are nothing but liars
shit all we have is fucking suppliers that's watching rap burn to the ground
But still will sell you nothing but fire
There's so much going on in this world sometimes it's hard to keep up
but I'm the bad guy for trying to speak up
Constantly telling me to shut up and stick to music (what?)
Well guess what bitch, now you gotta listen to it!
I refuse to be silenced, I used to be silent
me dying from speaking up is a future I'm fine with
cause even with laryngitis Imma speak the truth
and that came from the horses mouth, the same one that I use to rhyme with

[Ending]
Life aint a race but I still feel like I'm on the run
I still believe in superheroes is that saying something?
I'm always trying to save the world, does that make me one?
Or am I too naive to see that it just makes me dumb?
Am I too naive to think that I can change their minds?
My dollar and my dream could change the world with just my rhymes
I'm trying to play my part before we're forced to pay the fine
I wonder if it's working, or just wasting time?

...I guess I'll know in time

...We'll all know in time

...More to come
