Bite the Bullet

Another day, another travesty In the form of smoke and lead Desensitization to mass hysteria Has become our new way to honor the dead When did we become so numb To the sound of the hopeless screams and cries? While the mortuaries fill with those Who never got to truly live their lives The shots ring out--a siren song For those who lust for greed and power While the rest of us are left to mourn the lost With candlelights and flowers Why must it always take a tragedy To beget some semblance of common sense? Must we tolerate those who continue Digging their heels in on the other side of the fence? Who will bite the bullet And fight to change the course? 'Cause this vicious cycle always ends In bloodshed and remorse When leaving the safety of your home Is akin to leading a lamb to slaughter And your ex post facto thoughts and prayers Won't shield our sons and daughters What does it say about our moral compass When the exact same history repeats? As our politicians count their blood money While the body counts increase This can't be normalcy, The time for change is long past overdue We can no longer sit idly by For the next inevitable massacre in queue Why must we live in fear we won't get to see Our children make it to their teens? All because our leaders value their lives less Than the sale of countless AR-15's Placing the 2nd Amendment on a pedestal While parents place their child in a grave And teachers become posthumous heroes For the lives they attempted to save Yet they throw out mental health As a distraction to maintain the status quo To keep their lobbyists safe and sound And ensure their same cash flow How many innocent lives will it take For us to decide we've had enough? How many families will be torn apart Before we rise to call their bluff? Who will bite the bullet And fight to change the course? 'Cause this vicious cycle always ends In bloodshed and remorse When leaving the safety of your home Is akin to leading a lamb to slaughter And your ex post facto thoughts and prayers Won't shield our sons and daughters What does it say about our moral compass When the exact same history repeats? As our politicians count their blood money While the body counts increase This can't be normalcy, The time for change is long past overdue We can no longer sit idly by For the next inevitable massacre in queue We're not asking for utopia, Just a better chance to survive For the future of our nation To have the opportunity to thrive Without the thought of sacrificing themselves To be the next breaking news report It falls on us to lead the way To make sure another life isn't cut short To deny the rhetoric they spin Just so they can keep cashing those blank checks Dismantle the cat's cradle formed, Break this stranglehold on our necks Reject the gridlock they desperately cling to With malice and cold sweat They've shown their manifesto, Now we must show we won't forget Who will bite the bullet And fight to change the course? 'Cause this vicious cycle always ends In bloodshed and remorse When leaving the safety of your home Is akin to leading a lamb to slaughter And your ex post facto thoughts and prayers Won't shield our sons and daughters What does it say about our moral compass When the exact same history repeats? As our politicians count their blood money While the body counts increase This can't be normalcy, The time for change is long past overdue We can no longer sit idly by For the next inevitable massacre in queue We must be the ones to bite the bullet And fight to change the course Put an end to this vicious cycle, Stop the bloodshed and remorse We were never meant to serve As sacrificial lambs led to slaughter F*ck your thoughts and prayers, It takes action to protect our sons and daughters Recalibrate our moral compass, We can't afford for the same history to repeat We have to shout it from the rooftops, We can no longer be discreet A new normalcy awaits, It'll take a grassroots effort to come true No more sitting idly by, Change can only start with me and you
